WITH THE OTHER IN THE CAMPUS:

LEARNING, TEACHING, WORKING TOGETHER TO UNDERSTAND OTHERS AND OURSELVES BETTER

Case study was conducted in Sakarya University. Sakarya University is located city of Sakarya in Marmara region of Turkey. Sakarya University has 53.000 students in total and 3557 foreigner students from different countries.
Case study will aims to create a learning and practice environment for both domestic and foreign students living on the same campus. Participants are expected to discuss problems related to their lives on campus and to reflect these problems to photographs. Case study includes basic photography training, photo shoots and exhibition preparations. The aim of this activity is to see how the thoughts of the students experiencing the same problems on the same campus are expressed and changed. This educational process was organized based on the sense of critical pedagogy and Freireian Dialogue.
Participants of the Case Study: 13 foreigner students (from Syria, Yemen, Iraq; Afghanistan, Palestine, Indonesia, Turkmenistan) and 10 Turkish students.

The case study consists 5 steps.
1)      Introduction meeting
2)      Basic Photography Class
3)      Discussion (What we take photos about)
4)      Photo shooting
5)      Discussion (experiences in this study)
6)      Exhibition

1) In the first stage, participants organized an introduction meeting
2) In second stage, Turkish participants (students from Faculty of Communication) demonstrated and taught basic photography techniques to the foreigner participants.
3) After the basic photography class, participants discussed their campus life in a focus group. They talked on what they take photos about (main problems of the students, problems of foreigner students and interaction between Turkish students and foreigner students). In this discussion, they defined main problems of the campus and they decided to focus on the positive things in the campus not only on the negative things.
4) In this step, the participants gathered on the day they determined and took photos related to the themes they identified in the previous stage.
4) Participants organized a focus group in this step and discussed their experiences in the case study. They shared opinions and perceptions about the others and campus life. The discussion was very fruitful and many participant talked about the change of their perception about the others
5) Participants will organize an exhibition with their photos.
